Is it better to use toroidal transformer or EI type for power amplifier?

Jul 25, 2024 Leave a message

The toroidal transformer has a short magnetic circuit, high efficiency, copper loss and iron loss are smaller than EI transformer, small size and weight, easy to install and use, and the disadvantage is poor anti-DC saturation performance;

The advantages of EI type are that it is easy to process and manufacture, easy to wind, and has good saturation resistance. The disadvantages are large magnetic flux leakage, large volume weight at the same power, and relatively low conversion efficiency.

In general, both transformers can be used in power amplifiers, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Comparatively speaking, many audio "audiophiles" and manufacturers still prefer to choose toroidal transformers as audio transformers, and the advantages of toroidal transformers are more obvious.
