Structure of Single Phase EI Power Transformer

The name associated with the construction of a transformer is dependent upon how the primary and secondary windings are wound around the central laminated steel core. The two most common and basic designs of transformer construction are the Closed-core Transformer and the Shell-core Transformer.

In the "closed-core" type (core form) transformer, the primary and secondary windings are wound outside and surround the core ring. In the "shell type" (shell form) transformer, the primary and secondary windings pass inside the steel magnetic circuit (core) which forms a shell around the windings as shown below.

In both types of transformer core design, the magnetic flux linking the primary and secondary windings travels entirely within the core with no loss of magnetic flux through air. In the core type transformer construction, one half of the winding is wrapped around each leg (or limb) of the transformer's magnetic circuit as shown above.

The coils are not arranged with the primary winding on one leg and the secondary on the other but instead half of the primary winding and half of the secondary winding are placed one over the other concentrically on each leg in order to increase magnetic coupling allowing practically all of the magnetic lines of force go through both the primary and secondary windings at the same time.

This means that the magnetic flux circulating around the outer limbs of this type of transformer construction is equal to Φ/2. As the magnetic flux has a closed path around the coils, this has the advantage of decreasing core losses and increasing overall efficiency.

Installation requirements of Single Phase EI Power Transformer

The following conditions apply to transformer installations:
• Transformer impedance must match
• Parallel conductors are not permitted in the intermediate system

Common Applications of Single Phase EI Power Transformers

Single phase EI power transformers find widespread applications in various industries due to their versatility and efficiency.

Power Distribution

Single-phase transformers are essential in power distribution systems, where they help to step up or step down voltages for transmission over long distances. By adjusting voltage levels, transformers ensure efficient power distribution and minimize energy losses.

Voltage Regulation

In many electrical systems, maintaining a stable voltage is crucial for the proper operation of equipment and devices. Single-phase transformers play a vital role in voltage regulation by adjusting voltage levels to meet specific requirements.

Industrial Applications

Single-phase transformers are widely used in industrial settings for various applications, such as motor control, lighting, and HVAC systems. These transformers provide the necessary voltage levels to power different types of equipment and machinery.

Residential Uses

In residential buildings, single-phase transformers are commonly used for household appliances, lighting, and other electrical devices. By stepping down the voltage from the main power supply, transformers ensure safe and efficient operation of various household equipment.

Renewable Energy Systems

With the growing demand for renewable energy sources, single-phase transformers play a crucial role in solar and wind power systems. These transformers help to convert and regulate the voltage generated by renewable energy sources for use in the grid.

FAQ

Q: What is a single phase EI power transformer used for?

A: The single-phase transformer is mainly used in low voltage appliances like home devices. Some of the applications of a single-phase transformer are: Decrease voltage in localized power distribution. Regulation of voltage in television sets.

Q: Does it matter which way you wire a single phase EI power transformer?

A: Low voltage wire does not have polarity; it does not matter which of the two wires connects to the common terminal and which to the voltage terminal, as long as one wire goes to each. The correct voltage terminal is the one that results in an optimal voltage at the fixtures connected to that run.

Q: Is a single phase EI power transformer AC or DC?

A: It operates only with alternating current (AC) because direct current (DC) does not create any electromagnetic induction. The key components of a single phase transformer are: Core: It is made up of grain-oriented silicon steel laminations to reduce eddy current losses.

Q: What are the two factors that reduce the efficiency of single phase EI power transformers?

A: There are two main factors that affect transformer efficiency: losses and impedance. Losses can be divided into two categories: copper losses and iron losses. Copper losses occur in the winding of the transformer due to resistance.

Q: What is resistive loss in a single phase EI power transformer?

A: Resistive loss is the power loss in a transformer caused due to the ohmic resistance of the copper wire used to make the windings. The power is dissipated in the form of heat due to the electric currents in the conductors of transformer primary and secondary windings.

Q: What is the most common cause of single phase EI power transformer failure?

A: The most common causes of transformer failure include overloading, deterioration, power surges and moisture. Many of these failures occur within the transformer winding insulation and often times can be detected early by conducting rigorous visual, mechanical, and electrical inspections throughout its service life.

Q: What is humming loss in single phase EI power transformers?

A: Humming loss : When alternating current passes through the core of the transformer, the core starts vibrating and produced humming noise. Thus, some part of the electrical energy is wasted in the form of humming noise produced by the vibrating core of the transformer.

Q: Which three materials are used for single phase EI power transformer core?

A: Different parts of an electrical transformer are made of different materials. Windings are usually made of copper or aluminum, while the laminations are made of steel, often silicon steel. Cores can also be made of iron, amorphous metals, and ferrite ceramics, among others.

Q: How do you identify the line and load wires on a single phase EI power transformer?

A: Position: In most cases, line wires are located at the bottom of panels and devices. Meanwhile, load wires are located at the top. While this isn't true in every scenario, most things are wired in this way, making it easier to tell the difference between the two.

Q: What happens if I wire a single phase EI power transformer backwards?

A: When you reverse feed a step-down transformer, you lose the ability to adjust the primary voltage rating to accommodate for small discrepancies in the supply voltage. And if there is more than a 5% variance, the windings will over-excite causing excess heat and energy loss.
