How to Understand a Power Transformer? — A Guide to Key Parameters

Oct 21, 2025 Leave a message

Grasping these core parameters is fundamental to correctly selecting and evaluating a transformer.

Rated Capacity (kVA/MVA): This refers to the maximum apparent power a transformer can deliver. It serves as the primary basis for selection and must be determined according to the total load power and future expansion requirements.

Rated Voltage (kV): This indicates the operating voltage level for which the transformer is designed, encompassing both the primary and secondary side voltages.

Impedance Voltage (%): A critical parameter influencing short-circuit current magnitude, voltage stability, and parallel operation of transformers. It requires precise calculation based on the system's short-circuit capacity.

No-load Loss and Load Loss (kW):

No-load Loss (Core Loss): This represents the fixed loss occurring as soon as the transformer is energized, independent of the load. It directly reflects the quality of the core material and manufacturing craftsmanship.

Load Loss (Copper Loss): This loss varies with the load current and indicates the performance and design of the winding conductors.

Our company utilizes high-quality grain-oriented silicon steel and advanced winding techniques, effectively reducing both no-load and load losses to save significant operating costs for our clients.

Insulation Class: This denotes the thermal endurance capability of the insulation system (e.g., Class A, E, B, F, H), determining the transformer's overload capacity and service life.

Energy Efficiency Class: Countries worldwide have implemented energy efficiency standards for transformers (e.g., China's GB 20052, the EU's EU 548/2014). Selecting transformers with high energy efficiency classes is crucial for energy conservation, emission reduction, and minimizing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
